Challenge: Provide a sophisticated, high-quality audio network for a large live broadcast sporting event.
Solution: For the 2010 NBA All-Stars Game, PRG deployed the Riedel RockNet system to ensure the highest quality audio for the record-breaking crowd of 108,713 fans. Volume, Inc. designed the audio for the event, held at Cowboys’ Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The digital audio network system handled all of the courtside inputs, including the PA announcer, the microphones used for presentation of the game’s MVP Trophy, and all of the effects mics placed on the basketball hoops. These included lavaliers to hear the net swoosh, shotgun mics to hear the players on the floor as well as mics that picked up the game buzzers. PRG also installed output modules around the court to deliver VIP audio mixes to the production staff at the scorers table, audio to the front fill loudspeakers for the VIP seating area, and time code to the producer and stage manager.
The system received a signal from ESPN Radio that allowed PRG to send the broadcast to speakers throughout the concourse and concession areas. PRG also installed a mono PA feed back to ESPN Radio for them to blend with their broadcast. In addition to courtside functions, additional RockNet nodes were positioned at the FOH audio location and inside the giant center scoreboard, linked to the main system, which created one easily monitored network. With this system, PRG also had the ability to route eight channels of intercom from the patch location on the main floor up to the scoreboard to provide communications to the electricians, audio hands, spot operators, pyro technicians and video technicians who were positioned inside the scoreboard for the duration of the show. In addition to providing the audio system, PRG also provided five PRG Mbox Extreme® v3 media servers to control video content during the NBA pre-game concert and team introductions.
