PRG’s proprietary products keep pace with the most creative visions.

The Challenge: Supply a large automated lighting package with state-of-the-art control for a high profile Broadway musical.

The Solution: Production Resource Group (PRG) was pleased to provide the lighting system, including their new V676® lighting control console, for the Broadway musical, The Addams Family, with lighting design by Natasha Katz. Katz worked closely with Directors and Production Designers Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch to capture the shadowy light of the kooky Addams family home that is the setting for the show.

The very tall set, consisting of walls of shutters, created an interesting challenge that led Katz to design an uncharacteristic plot. “Every single light overhead is a moving light,” she explained. “We were able to get in some incandescent light because we have a lot of VL5s overhead—incandescent VL5s. I think with moving lights, you just need a little pinch of incandescent salt. It looks good on faces and costumes.” PRG provided the system, which also included ETC Source Four ellipsoidals and VL1000 Arcs, VL3500s, and MAC 2000s.

Automated Lighting Programmer Aland Henderson selected the V676 control console. “I found that it makes my programming move faster. The amount of data that you can have, with eight touchscreens, is awesome,” he explained. “PRG improved the shutter control on the console for me since most of our fixtures had shutters which were used extensively.”

Katz agreed that the console was the right choice for the show. “The V676 console worked out extremely well. There are so many things that can be done so much faster on it. I think that it’s a good console for theatre work; certainly as we used it for moving lights.”
