PRG’s proprietary Mbox Extreme™ Media Server lets programmers respond instantly to changes and inspiration.

Challenge:
Create custom video content for top musical acts in a dynamic live television environment.

Solution:
Time is the challenge when creating video content for special event television productions — especially those with multiple acts. “I use every moment available, right up to the show,” says top programmer Laura Frank.

For the third annual Fashion Rocks special performed live at Radio City Music Hall and broadcast by CBS, Frank used PRG’s proprietary Mbox Extreme Media Server to provide video support for the standard definition projection screen at the center of the giant stage and as the sole output to a 448-Versa™ TUBE rig framing the two sides and foot of the projection screen.

Mbox allowed Frank to build a basic set of tools, or pieces of video, she could take to rehearsal and manipulate there to create the final creative statement. “For example, if I was building some generic color effects for the Versa TUBES, I only built one type of rhythmic effect in a couple of colors, knowing I could manipulate it on site with Mbox,” she recalls. “I could respond to the live moment and not just the soundtrack in front of a computer at home.”

With Mbox’ extensive stock library, Frank also knew she could make the inevitable last-minute changes on the fly. “Rather than going home and re-editing, I could rethink what I have on the server and make it work.”

Technical support by Matt Corke and other PRG staff was “fantastic,” says Frank. “Everyone was very helpful in making sure Mbox would do what I needed.”
