PRG on tour in Europe with Night of the Proms

It’s that time of year again, Night of the Proms gathers young and old for a night of classical music, shaken up by modern pop artists. The concept of the classical orchestra Il Novecento, playing together with pop artists has been popular for many years, and it still does its magic. However, successful concepts also need some innovation to remain interesting. Under the supervision of Head of Production Alain Van Isacker and Light Design Company Arf & Yes, PRG was asked to develop a custom-made solution in terms of lighting, sound and video.

The biggest eye-catcher in the show are the moving V-shaped trusses above the stage. The custom-made trolley beam system we developed last year for the Night of the Proms, is used here as well, though in a slightly different way. We added a Kynesis hoist in the middle of the rail system in order to move the truss in a V-shaped way. Overall, 6 of these custom-made V-shapes are hanging above the stage. Each V-shape contains 10 Robe Pointes, combined with 56 MiTRIX panels.

On both sides of every V-shape, we added two custom-made triangular hanging brackets, each containing 6 Clay Paky Sharpy Wash 330 fixtures. We also developed custom-made O-frames to be suspended on each side of the stage. The O-frames are made of 86 MiTRIX panels, combined with 10 Ledwashes that shine through the semi transparent MiTRIX LED panels.

As a backspot, we use our very own PRG GroundControl™ Followspot System. The floorlighting is composed by 66 GLP Impression X4S units that are supported by another 10 Robe Pointes underneath the main screen behind the stage. An Arkaos Media server is used for processing the video images.

As for sound design, Patrick Demoustier was in charge of the configuration. For the first time, the whole PA set was built upon the Energia line from Adamson. The Main PA consists of E15 speakers, with E219 subs, E12 outfits and S10 frontfills. All this is managed by digital PLM amplifiers. All amplifiers are managed by a dual redundant Dante Network.

In collaboration with PRG, PSE invested in a digital wireless system for the choir, so they can move freely on the stage. For the whole show, we use 40 digital monitors and 25 in-ear monitors, together with a wireless intercom system. Our wireless specialists put in a lot of effort to keep all these signals standing!

Like last year, PRG provides a complete DiGiCo console kit. A SD7 as main desk and a SD10 (for the pre-mix of the bugler, woodwinds and percussion) are used as FOH consoles. On stage, a SD5 desk monitors the orchestra and the choir. De monitor signals of the artists and the band are processed by a SD7 mixer. The strings are mixed in the backstage on a DiGiCo SD8, the choir on a DiGiCo SD8-24. All DiGiCo equipment operates in an Optocore redundant network.

“Because the orchestra needs to change during the show and we don’t always have time to soundcheck, we make presets per instrument and musician so our technicians can apply specific presets according to the orchestra’s composition. A show like Night of the Proms is quite different from any other concert in terms of mixing, because we have to deal with so many in- and outputs. Each input is first processed in a submix, per group of instrument. Then, the submix is sent to the mixing tables. The Opto network processes around 500 channels at this time. This gives you an idea of the complexity we are handling.’, explains Patrick Demoustier.

Night of the Proms started her tour in the Antwerps Sportpaleis on Saturday, November 5th. Last week, two shows followed in Antwerp on Thursday and Friday, followed by a last show in Belgium on Saturday in the Ethias Arena Hasselt. All credits go to the amazing crew under the supervision of Sound Designer Patrick Demoustier and Production Managers Jo Vaes (lighting) and Stef De Raet (rigging). In less than 12 hours, the whole set-up is moved from Antwerp to Hasselt. After 4 shows in Belgium, Night of the Proms travels to the Netherlands, Luxemburg and Germany.

PRG to Showcase New Product Lineup at LDI 2016

PRG, the global partner of choice for the world’s leading entertainment and event producers, designers, and creative talents, announced today the debut of GroundControl Longthrow™ (GCLT), a revolutionary new product addition to PRG’s GroundControl™ Followspot System. In addition, PRG has announced Mbox v4 software for media server professionals as well as enhancements to the RH+A ReNEW-LD–a line dimmable LED Retrofit Assembly. PRG’s new product lineup will be showcased in Booth #2236 with daily demos and hands-on access to products provided during LDI 2016 held this week in Las Vegas, October 21-23, 2016.

“Our goal is to be the market leader across all product categories offering our customer a single-source solution for the most innovative, functional, high-performance, intelligent products and services,” stated Jere Harris, Chairman & CEO of PRG.

Chris Conti, Product Manager for GCLT, added, “At this year’s LDI event we’re very excited about introducing our new GCLT, a precision engineered automated luminaire, built from the ground up to have a small footprint, big feature set, high output, and fully optimized for long throw followspot applications. The GCLT is not just an incremental improvement of a traditional followspot. It’s going to revolutionize a category that has seen very little innovation over the past 30 years.”

PRG NEW Product Lineup at LDI 2016

Get hands-on with the updated GroundControl™ family of products — Including the GroundControl Best Boy Spot HP, Ground Control Bad Boy Spot HP, GroundControl Longthrow (GCLT), 4-way switch box, and the new v3.0 software. The GroundControl™ Followspot System consists of specially customized PRG luminaires which include a built-in camera, and can be flown or mounted in locations around a venue which would not normally accommodate a followspot.

GroundControl™ allows designers huge flexibility in where to locate their followspots and the operators can be safely located on the ground within the venue. In addition to the safety benefits, the GroundControl™ Followspot System also does away with or minimizes “seat kills,” the need to remove seats to create traditional followspot positions – a revenue bonus for venues.

NEW: GroundControl Longthrow (GCLT)
Long Throw 150'+. Ideal for Award shows, Arenas, Stadiums, Key FOH spot and much more.

PRG’s new GroundControl Longthrow™ (GCLT) Luminaire is a precision engineered automated luminaire, built from the ground up to have a small footprint, big feature set, high output, and fully optimized for long throw followspot applications. The GCLT feature set includes an ultra-narrow, 2º to 6º zoom, variable frost, a dichroic cross fading CMY color mixing system, variable dichroic color correction, framing shutters, and an iris; as well as full pan and tilt control. All of these features are remotely controlled by a GroundControl Followspot Controller from up to 2000’ away, keeping the operator safe while giving designers more creative tools and options for placement.  The GCLT changes the fundamental way in which big long throw followspots are employed by changing the dynamics of safety, rigging, accessibility, and even trucking costs as well.

Experience the all new Mbox v4 software — With live in-booth demos in LED Video, projection, and multiple output systems. Recently used on the Drake ‘Summer Sixteen’ tour, Mbox v4 is a must-see for any media server user looking for a simple, robust solution that provides professional results.

Improved UI: Mbox’s revised user interface provides new controls for patching, output setup, mix setup, and preferences. And the UI now supports independent windows for each output plus the setup window.

Increased Playback Layers: In a dramatic upgrade from previous versions, Mbox v4 increases the number of playback layers in each version of the software along with the maximum content size and output size to allow for 4K playback and output, enhances the pixel mapping, and allows for up to 32 independently mastered outputs (Mbox Designer).

Updated Playback Engine: One of the most significant upgrades to the Mbox software is the heavily revised playback engine. The switch away from QuickTime technology to AVFoundation has unlocked new potential within the software, enabling more layers for simultaneous playback, playback smoothness, both 4K playback and output, and more outputs.  With these updates, the software can more efficiently and effectively manage additional pixel mapping capabilities like group mastering and merging, plus the new configurable sources for pixel mapping.

Also on the LDI Show Floor from PRG:

The new RH+A ReNEW-LD— LD Line Dimmable LED Retrofit Assembly + the Bullet 2.0 focusable and compact LED luminaries for a range of architectural and entertainment applications. The line, which includes a daylight and tungsten white light version and a powerful UV blacklight spot, has been installed in a wide variety of themed entertainment, retail, and architectural lighting projects.

The all-new PRG ProShop— Professional Used Gear Website. Come by booth #2236 for a quick tour of the new site with expanded category offerings.

PRG GroundControl™ Followspot System Wins at AV Awards 2016

On Friday 30th September 2016, the AV Awards took place at a glamorous event at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel. The awards, which celebrate the best product, projects, and people in the AV industry, was attended by a team from PRG XL Video, led by Executive VP & COO, EMEA, Gary Boyd.

Following the announcement of the shortlist for Production Product of the Year, sponsored by DB Systems, PRG’s GroundControl™ Followspot System was announced as the winner in the category which included products from Barco, Elation Professional, Sennheiser, X-Rite Photo and Video, and NewTek Inc.

The revolutionary product is already making waves across the production industry, particularly in the concert touring, theatre and television markets, and the judges commended the way the product is having a huge effect on the way lighting designers and producers design their shows and events.

The GroundControl™ Followspot System consists of a specially customized PRG Bad Boy spotlight which includes an in-built camera, and can be flown from rigging or mounted in locations around a venue which would not normally accomodate a followspot; a truss box which provides the link between the fixture and the controller; and the ground-based controller unit which can be operated from up to 610 metres away from the fixture.

GroundControl™ allows designers huge flexibility in where to locate their followspots and the operators can be safely located on the ground within the venue, without the need to climb rigging. In addition to the safety benefits, the GroundControl™ Followspot System also negates the need to remove seats to create traditional followspot positions – a revenue bonus for venues.

Gary Boyd comments: “I was delighted to accept the award for Production Product of the Year for GroundControl. The product is making huge waves across our industry, and we’re very proud to have developed this in-house. Our R&D team in Dallas have done an excellent job in creating a followspot system which is rapidly growing in popularity and demand!”

PRG Alliance in Eastern Europe

PRG Alliance extends its reach to Eastern Europe

The new members in Poland, Hungary and Romania will support growing PRG Alliance demand for technical production services in the region.

The market is changing and major producers are bringing more projects to Eastern Europe. The region is hosting major international events in segments such as sports, music festivals and corporate events.

In order to keep up with this demand, PRG Alliance welcomes two new members to its international network: ARAM Multimedia in Poland; and Visual Europe, covering Hungary and Romania.

ARAM is one of the largest companies in Poland specializing in full production solutions with an emphasis on event design; creative video technology applications; and project management for large scale events, offering a wide range of services from concept to delivery.

Visual Europe is a new group in Hungary created by the merger of the companies DCN Rental and AV Control. The company today is owned by Garangold Venture Capital Fund, a private equity fund that is now investing in new technology, and soon in the acquisition of another company in the country. They will open a new office in Romania to follow its vision to be the largest technical event production company in the region.

The two companies explain the benefits in being members of PRG Alliance: “Now that we have invested in the creation of Visual Europe as one company, we need to have a strong partner in Europe to learn from them and to generate new business opportunities for both parties. We believe that our clients will be the ones to gain from the application of the technical knowledge we will get from the relationship with the other members”, says Szabolcs Botond, CEO of Visual Europe Group.

“ARAM has a similar strategy as PRG as we can support larger, more complex productions. We see a lot of synergy also with the other members of PRG Alliance and we believe this partnership will bring many benefits for both Polish and international markets”, comments Rafal Mrzyglocki, Managing Director of ARAM Multimedia.

“We are pleased to welcome these new partners in Eastern Europe,” said Tom van Hemelryck, PRG Alliance Director. “Our clients and Alliance partners are seeing a growing demand for events across the region, and the addition of these new rental suppliers to the PRG Alliance ensures we can expand our high quality of service into even more countries.”

The partnership has already started with the companies collaborating with the PRG Alliance members for support in productions in their regions and abroad across this busy summer season.

PRG Alliance support in Korea, Portugal and in Italy brings up the spring colors

PRG Alliance members do great events all year long, but three of them deserve special attention. During this spring PRG got the support from the PRG Alliance members in Korea, Portugal and in Italy to deliver outstanding productions.

The second Condé Nast International Luxury Conference held in Seoul on April 20th and 21st 2016 focused on the future of luxury, and the role of Northeast Asia as a new hub for fashion. PRG’s services included full turnkey solutions in Audio, Video, Lighting, Rigging, Staging and Scenography for this event.

PRG China’s technical director Simon Kayser led the project counting on PRG Alliance members Ally & Co. and Total Korea Lighting & Sound Co. to deliver the most optimal solution. The hard work paid off with a smooth operation living up to the client’s expectation.

Portugal was the stage of Rock in Rio, a large music festival originated in Rio de Janeiro. Since 2004 PRG provides lighting and video technology at festivals in Rio de Janeiro, Madrid, Las Vegas and Lisbon.

The 2016 edition marked the 30th anniversary of the festival and received more than 329 thousand people in two consecutive weekends of May in Lisbon. This time PRG had support from the company FX Road Lights – one of the main audiovisual suppliers for music concerts in Lisbon and part of PRG Alliance.

Another great impression was delivered in Italy on 11-13 May, on a show projected into the most remarkable building in Rome: the Coliseum. The spectacle was called “Colosseum Light Message – Love to Humanity, Love to Earth” and celebrated the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations agreement between Italy and Japan.

PRG Alliance member STS Communication and New Light Group managed the entire technical production of the event - including projection mapping, audio and lighting systems, generators and scaffolding. They provided full support to the Japanese producers Motoko Ishii e Akari-Lisa Ishii, long term clients of PRG Japan and also the producers of similar shows in France, Germany and Switzerland.

“We are happy to see more collaboration among PRG Alliance members” says Tom Van Hemelryck, PRG Alliance Director. “The clients appreciate the initiative to look for local support in expertise, equipment and crew. It optimizes the project costs and brings to the event a local knowledge that is very important when doing events abroad”, he concludes.

The PRG Alliance Summit is already a key date on the calendar for members, allowing them to meet face to face, share knowledge and best practices, and increase their collaboration. This year’s Summit included a presentation of the PRG Alliance’s future plans from Alliance Director, Tom Van Hemelryck, and Account Manager, Luciana Rosa, which include expansion into new regions, opportunities for training, and the aim to include a wider variety of service companies.
After the introduction, members of the Alliance shared their experiences and knowledge acquired during the past year, including a custom-shaped large-scale LED floor and wall for concert touring; special lighting for fashion shows; and the logistical issues facing shows located in unusual or remote locations.
Following this the PRG Projects team shared examples of their work with custom LED projects for major opening ceremonies including wireless hex panels and pixel tablets seen by millions around the world.
“Watching the presentations, we see the potential applications for these technologies in Italy – we are always eager to bring new services to our clients and we see the potential for customized LED solutions in our market,” commented Alessandro Rossani, CTO of STS Communications in Italy.
Members also enjoyed a presentation from Chris Reed of Restless Communications on the best ways for technical production companies to use social media to promote their brands; and this was followed by sessions from Minesh Pore, General Manager of Pico Europe on working with corporate clients and managing expectations, and Lee Charteris, VP Operations, Flash Entertainment on the challenges of producing concerts and events in emerging markets.
The Summit concluded with a dinner in the Festhalle which further enabled the members to network with each other.
“We see how the PRG Alliance is well established and continues growing through making personal connections between the members and with the market,” said Tom Van Hemelryck, Director of PRG Alliance. “We carefully select the members and I am happy to have such an unprecedented group of companies with high-quality technical production services working together on several events in the last year – success always comes from collaboration.”

PRG Wins Big in Las Vegas

PRG Takes Home Both an LDI Product Award and a Parnelli Award as “Video Company of the Year”

This past weekend, Production Resource Group, L.L.C. (PRG) took home two big wins on Saturday night while exhibiting at LDI 2015 in Las Vegas, NV.  Following an enthusiastic response and non-stop crowds in the PRG booth all Friday and Saturday, the LDI team was awarded the LDI Best Debuting Product – Staging and Rigging for the new PRG GroundControl™ Followspot System. Presented at the LDI Awards event on the show floor and accepted by PRG Product Manager for Luminaires Chris Conti, who thanked PRG’s Technology Development team, based in Dallas. He also thanked the industry colleagues who contributed feedback during development, especially Lighting Designer Bob Barnhart and the Full Flood team for their inspiration towards developing this revolutionary product.

The PRG GroundControl Followspot System allows the spot operator to be in a remote location up to 2,000’ away while operating a high output PRG Bad Boy® Spot automated luminaire as a followspot. GroundControl quite literally places the spot op safely on the ground and the physical footprint within the rig of the luminaire is just 30 inches round and weighs only 172 lbs. Because of this small footprint and low weight, followspots can now be placed in a wider variety of positions than they ever could before, reducing the weight and cumbersome challenges sometimes faced when incorporating a followspot into certain designs.

Later in the evening at the 15th Annual Parnelli Awards, a gala event and dinner held at the Rio Hotel & Casino, PRG was named the Video Rental Company of the Year. The Parnelli, named after Tour & Production Manager Rick ‘Parnelli’ O'Brien, holds prestige in the production industry as it reflects being nominated and voted upon by colleagues industry-wide. The award was accepted by Nick Jackson, Senior Vice President, PRG Music Group.

“This is a real honor,” notes Mickey Curbishley, CEO of the PRG Music Group. “Though the award was for our work on U2, it's really a reflection of everything we do on every level. Congratulations to our entire PRG team, certainly to everyone who worked so hard on the amazing U2 tour and a big thank you to everyone for voting for us as number one. You all keep us at the top of our game.”

The U2 tour’s stunning video visuals, achieved by the tour’s Video Director Stefaan ‘Smasher’ Desmedt, leveraged the scrim-like qualities of the PRG V-Thru LED Video modules. Built into two screens, each 96’ long by 23’ tall, consisted of 240 individual 28mm V-Thru panels with a 66% transparency for true scrim-like effects. Placed on either side of a 96’ long flown catwalk, Smasher took full advantage of the product’s semi-transparency to allow the band members to appear to become part of the video screen and interact with the content. PRG is providing full video support on U2’s iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour.

Both wins reflect PRG’s dedication to "work smarter" solutions that are designed to address today's complex production needs with truly uncompromising commitment to innovation, value, and performance. At PRG our pride in results is seen when our solutions become creative tools that are incorporated as element of the audience experience.
