XL Video Supports The Harmonium Project at the 2015 Edinburgh International Festival

To create a spectacular opening for the 2015 Edinburgh International Festival, and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus, 59 Productions, with the Edinburgh International Festival, created The Harmonium Project.

The free outdoor event drew in crowds of approximately 19,500 people and combined the music of John Adams’ choral work Harmonium, made especially by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Edinburgh Festival Chorus conducted by Peter Oundjian, with visually stunning projection mapping onto the Usher Hall in central Edinburgh.

The 34-minute performance of The Harmonium Project integrated scientific data captured with the support of the Centre of Design and Informatics at the University of Edinburgh, who collaborated on the project to examine the effects singing has on both the performer and the listener.

Having worked with them successfully on Sinatra: The Man & His Music in the West End, and wonder.land at the Manchester International Festival, 59 Productions sought out XL Video to realize their video design for The Harmonium Project.

XL Video’s Head of UK Theatre, Ed Cooper liaised with the team from 59 Productions – Creative Directors, Leo Warner and Richard Slaney; Technical Associate, Maximilien Spielbichler; and Production Manager, James Roxburgh – to create a technical specification for the exterior projection mapping of the beautiful Usher Hall building.

To cover the intricate columned façade of the Hall, XL Video employed fourteen of their Panasonic PT-DZ21KE projectors, with content fed by five of XL’s d3 Technologies' d3 media servers.

The show control, including triggers to the d3 servers, was all handled via an MA Lighting grandMA2 Light desk and NPU, with back-up from a MA Command Wing.

The media server racks and set-up were managed by XL’s in-house Technician, Erica Frost, with on-site projectors and media servers handled by Craig Harrower. 

A team of animators from 59 Productions, under the direction of Nicol Scott, created the content for the show, which was designed to perfectly fit the building. 

XL Video’s Ed Cooper commented: “It was lovely to work with Leo, Richard and their team so soon after Sinatra: The Man & His Music. 59 Productions’ technical briefs are always very exacting, and provided our team with a range of challenges which they ably met. The show looked fantastic, and the crowd were delighted by the spectacle!”

PRG congratulates all the nominees for the 67th Annual Emmy® Awards for their outstanding achievements in the television production industry. XL VIDEO Brings a Glow To Red Rocks for Bassnectar

Continuing their work with some of the world’s highest profile EDM artists, XL Video worked with DJ/Producer Bassnectar to light up Colorado’s legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater with an abundance of LED, as well as supply control systems and crew for two shows in late May.

This year marks the 5th year Bassnectar has played at the renowned outdoor venue and Production Manager, Marc Immerman, contacted XL Video to ensure the video for the show would match the spectacular surroundings.

XL Video’s Touring Projects Director, Gareth Jeanne worked with Bassnectar’s team to specify over 300 tiles of XL’s ROE Visual  MC-7 high resolution LED for the multi-surface stage design.

Mimicking the shrinking perspective of the venue, LED columns were arranged each 2 tiles wide, and 9, 8, 7 and 6 tiles high on each side of the stage.

Surrounding the performers, a 16x8 tile LED screen was flown upstage and topped with a convex curved LED header flown above the stage.

XL Video built a custom dolly for Bassnectar’s curved LED DJ booth which allowed it to be easily wheeled into place for the headliner’s set.

With a venue of this size and arrangement, it was important that the control system created a seamless link between front of house, stage control and the on-stage riser.

XL Video’s team, led by on-site Project Manager Norvin Maloney and Crew Chief Eric Escujuri installed a solution using Lightware MODEX TX/RX kits which  transferred the signals from the client’s own media servers at front of house. These were coupled with a Lightware 16x16 Matrix which fed the LED processors.

To enable Bassnectar, his VJ, Max Chang, and his backline engineer to easily monitor the on-screen content, XL Video utilized a Barco ImagePRO-II scaler/converter to pull out a region of interest on the back screen which was then converted to SDi and transmitted to displays on the DJ riser, and to the team at front-of-house.

This ensured all the crew were completely in sync with the visuals and the music across the huge venue. The visuals were served via a UNS media server built for the Bassnectar tour by [namethemachine] - Peter Sistrom, Mary Franck, and Matt Davis which was operated by Chang. This setup was backed with Fiber networking, using Cisco Managed Network Switches between stage control, front of house and the DJ riser.

Gareth Jeanne commented: “Red Rocks is an iconic venue, but it does also present some interesting challenges for live video production. Our crew - Eric Escujuri, Julian Ruiz and Darsak Patel – more than met the challenge; collaborating with Bassnectar’s team through four days of rehearsals in Denver and then installing our smart control set-up and outdoor LED screens at Red Rocks. The resulting shows delighted the assembled audience across both nights!

Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour

PRG converts marble stone quarry into freestyle motorcycle stage. 

Production Resource Group AG (PRG) in Germany supported the prestigious “Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour” as it stopped in the Greek capital Athens for the first time, Friday, June 12th. The multi-annual competition, hosted by Red Bull since 2001, sees the best freestyle athletes of the motocross scene (FMX) competing against one another in some of the most fantastically unusual locations around the globe. 

The world-renowned Dionyssos marble stone quarry, on the outskirts of Athens, served as the spectacular stage for the second stop of this year’s “Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour.” Throughout history the quarry birthed many famous Greek and Roman monuments and sculptures, such as the preeminent Acropolis. PRG’s elaborate lighting installation ensured that 12 of the world’s best FMX drivers were able to successfully bridge ancient and modern times. The design for this great show was done by the German lighting designer Florian Schreiter. 

The installation was challenging – tight access points, wind, dust, darkness, and long cable paths. A complex lighting and power network had to be installed without impairing the performance of the athletes or the view of the 1,000 fans in attendance. At the center of PRG’s solution was four 100kw SoftSuns – providing tremendous brightness to the course while hanging from truck mounted cranes. These are ideal fixtures for lighting large areas and sports events. 

Another challenge was presented on an even larger area of 200 x 250 meters. The driveways leading up to the FMX course required light as well, yet no rigging points existed. The solution – PRG constructed a two-story high platform with the help of truck mounted cranes to position the array of lighting fixtures and operating personnel. 

The season opening of this year’s “Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour” took place at the Plaza de Toros monument in Mexico City, Friday, March 6th. After the stop in Athens the tour continues on Friday, July 10th in Madrid at the bullring “Las Ventas.” The athletes rock the city of Pretoria during their 4th stop Saturday, September 12th. The Tour’s grand finale is Friday, October 30th in the United Arab Emirates.

Collaboration was the word at the 1st PRG Alliance Summit

Production Resource Group, L.L.C., (PRG) recently concluded the first PRG Alliance Summit, held on 16th April 2015 during the Prolight + Sound 2015 trade fair at the Festhalle Messe Frankfurt. Prolight + Sound is the leading international trade fair for the event-technology sector and covers all products, trades, and services for this market segment. This was the ideal event to bring together the PRG Alliance members and at the Summit, there were 28 countries represented by 65 attendees. Since the PRG Alliance was launched at Prolight + Sound 2014, the Summit also marked its one-year anniversary.

The Marvel Experience

Hero Ventures, a Los Angeles-based entertainment company, relied on PRG to provide the technical and production elements for The Marvel Experience, an epic-scale, immersive adventure experience in which guests step into and interact with the world of Marvel’s Super Heroes and Super Villains. The Marvel Experience was a fully immersive guest environment experience that included 3D 360˚ video projection, first-person ‘live’ interactive gaming and a dynamic 4D motion ride.  A complex control network was required to integrate all of the technical aspects of the production which brought  everything together under multiple domes. The entire touring complex covered over 160,000 square feet and featured seven interlocked, air-inflated Domes, with the largest towering over six stories high. Airbus-H160-Reveal

At HAI Heli-Expo 2015 in Orlando, Fla. Airbus Helicopters unveiled the twin-engined H160. To ensure that the reveal of this innovative new 5.5-6-ton-class rotorcraft’s nose-to-tail breakthroughs in design and systems took center stage an enormous 60’ hi-resolution LED screen lifted up and a full surround kabuki drop was employed by PRG. Working closely with the creative team from Skyline Sector 5, PRG provided the gear and team to realize the impactful design. Watch the show- stopping reveal and see the beautiful H160.

Duke Dumont at Coachella 2015

British DJ and Producer, Duke Dumont performed on two Saturday nights at this year’s Coachella festival and PRG was with him all the way from rehearsals through his shows in the Sahara Tent. Production Designer Alex Reardon worked closely with PRG Account Executive Julian Edwards as PRG supplied the lighting and crew in addition to having Dumont rehearse his show at the PRG Los Angeles location prior to loading out to Coachella.

Reardon gives credit to some of his fellow collaborators on this project. “Seth Robinson programmed the living daylights out of it using his proprietary MIDI Ableton rig,” he comments. “Seth programmed 18,000 lx cues in six days! All without breaking a sweat! Roger Staub of Infect Productions provided the video content; he is a masterful fellow. Bill Rahmy was our Production Manager. I also worked with Doug DeBusschere of Total Productions who built the three stations – keyboards, main, and drums; including all of the recessed LED work. In addition to providing us with space to put it all together, program, and rehearse, Julian and provided the lighting, crew, and wrangling that we needed. It was a perfect collaboration of artist, management, vendors, and designers. What an extraordinary evening!”

Edwards worked closely with Head of Global Touring, Three Six Zero Group, Paul Macrae on bringing this production to life. Mark Coleman was the PRG Nocturne Account Executive on the video side for this production. The Lighting Director/Operator was Jason DeBoer; the two PRG Mbox media servers were handled by Mike Hanson; and the crew was headed up by Lighting Crew Chief Nigel Monk and Assistant Crew Chief Wyatt Bartell.

An association that always wants to bring the best that they can to their membership and are also budget conscious on behalf of their exhibitors. Customer support, long zoom ratio and image stabilization reasons behind premier live event video company’s brand loyalty

As part of the company’s overall expansion of video touring production services, Production Resource Group LLC (PRG) recently purchased 58 additional FUJINON lenses for use on its newly acquired Grass Valley LDX80 Première cameras. PRG Nocturne, the largest non-broadcasting purchaser of FUJINON lenses, has selected only FUJINON lenses since the company’s inception in 1981. PRG Music Group focuses on providing integrated video and lighting solutions for worldwide tours, festivals, concerts, and corporate events.

The newly purchased FUJINON lenses will be part of PRG Nocturne’s 10 new HD Flypacks equipped with Grass Valley LDX Première advanced imaging cameras and Karrera K-Frame S-series switchers. The next XA99X8.4BESM ultra-wide lenses will be delivered at the end of April, in time for U2’s next tour that begins in May in Vancouver. PRG will have a total of four XA99x’s on the upcoming U2 worldwide tour.

PRG Nocturne’s HD Flypacks have been used so far for video projection and production duties for The Rolling Stones, Maroon 5, Paul McCartney, the Eagles, The Script, and many other major tours.

R&B Artist Banks Performs on Letterman

For her Late Show with David Letterman appearance last week, Banks, an R&B singer, who performed "Beggin for Thread" stood inside a two-way mirror box built by PRG. Designed by Rob Sinclair, with production management by Brian Cross at Monotone, Inc., the mirror box was the eye-catching centerpiece of her performance, even getting host David Letterman to comment that it "was beautiful." Jump to 2:53 in the stunning performance video to see the real magic.

Football Fan Central

National College Football Championship Fan Central


Fan Central was a hub of activity for fans of both Ohio State and the University of Oregon. Covering over 500,000 square feet at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center there were interactive experiences, sponsor booths, meet-and-greets with current and former players. There was even a regulation 100-yard football field that was the site of clinics, pep rallies, national Media Day, and more. PRG provided eight video projectors and screens around the Fan Central space to project both video and audio content as well as sponsor information. PRG also provided automated and conventional lighting to highlight the sponsors and displays around the massive convention center space. The conventional lighting was used for highlighting displays while the automated lighting was used to create excitement as well as to project the two school’s team colors across the fans. Integral to all of the lighting and video equipment were two truss spines, each over 400′ long, to provide hanging positions and to carry the over 2,400′ of fiber optic cables connecting the space, which covered 3 convention halls.

The football field, which hosted fan ‘receiver for a day’ activities and youth football clinics, was converted into the Media Day venue by PRG. The two teams took turns meeting with national media on the 100-yard field. PRG created five interview booths for the coach and four key players with truss, a remote controlled camera as well as integral audio and video feeds. Reporters gathered in front of the interview booths to ask questions and take photos. PRG technicians took the video feed and sent the imagery up to three projectors that were seamlessly blended on a 10-foot high by 50-foot wide projection screen. Each player and coach had their images enlarged for the fans in the bleachers and the PRG audio technicians had five isolated audio feeds so the fans could tune into the channel assignment for each player. PRG also lit the field for the crush of media interviewing the entire team and coaching staff on the field. ESPN and the Big 10 network also broadcast live from the event.

Pac-Man Commercial Build

PRG was pleased to work once again on the Bud Light Up for Whatever campaign, this time to create something memorable for its Super Bowl ad, a human-sized Pac-Man. They turned to PRG and Hargrove, Inc to bring the concept to life. PRG handled the lighting, audio, and video portions as well as site coordination and permitting and Hargrove provided the scenic design and art direction for the project. The Pac-Man maze for the ad was 76-feet deep by 85-feet wide and was built on a parking lot in downtown Los Angeles for the two day commercial shoot.


For the dots in the maze, LD Steve Richards employed 250 Martin Professional LED Rush PARs that would shoot straight up through holes and Plexiglas embedded in the deck. Using a tracking system, the dots would be turned off as the Pac-Man ran over the top of them. In the center of the game a panel of 7mm video modules under Plexiglas was used for the cherry that the Pac-Man would target to gain the upper hand over the ghosts that chase him through the maze.

Richards created for truss positions at 20-feet high at the four corners of the game maze for his key and backlighting positions with 24 PRG Best Boy Spots 24 Robe Pointe luminaires. On the ground below and mounted level with the top of maze, he used 36 PRG Bad Boy Spots along with 36 Pointes. These positions gave clear shots across the maze to highlight the Pac-Man as he negotiated the maze and depending on the camera shot could act as key or backlighting as necessary. The lights could also wash the surrounding buildings with pattern washes and aerial beam effects over the top of the maze. The lighting was all networked via the PRG Series 400 Power and Data distribution system. The lighting control was via a MA Lighting grandMA2 console that were programmed by Matthew Shimamoto. Video control was handled via a PRG Mbox media server controlled via a PRG V476 console.

Wheel of Fortune

It takes a lot of planning and hundreds of people to bring the Hawaiian tapings of Wheel of Fortune to life. Check out how the production elements came together for the Hawaii shows that are airing this week. Whenever the show goes on the road for remote shoots, they turn to PRG for the lighting, audio, and rigging.

PRG has been supporting the location shoots for Wheel of Fortune since 1994 and have done nearly 100 remote productions for the show. This particular Hawaiian shoot took place in September 2014, with the equipment prepped and loaded in containers at the PRG Orlando shop. Those containers were then shipped via train to Long Beach, CA where they were loaded onto a container ship to Hawaii. After arriving in Oahu, the equipment containers were put on barges to the big island. The production elements are extensive; especially since the Hawaii production is all shot outdoors where we have to consider the weather and location as we build a studio in the scenic locale.

Grand Canyon Experience

PRG was onsite in Phoenix, Arizona for Super Bowl XLIX to support a range of events and activities leading up to the big game, including one of the most ambitious of undertakings – bringing the Grand Canyon to downtown. Super Bowl Central was the epicenter of fan activity in Phoenix and the Grand Canyon Experience was the marquee attraction. Built to replicate a specific climbing section of the canyon, fans had fun scaling the walls alongside the cooling waterfall, while an incorporated LED video screen showed all the Super Bowl coverage. VP of PRG Services, Orestes Mihaly headed up the project and takes us on a behind the scenes tour of the build.

Queen and Adam Lambert

For the Queen + Adam Lambert tour, PRG worked with design firm Stufish and designer Ric Lipson to create the scenic and staging elements. The design for the show included an enormous metal letter “Q” at the back of the stage that framed the video screen. The Q was fully automated by PRG Scenic to take “a bow” at one point in the show. The scenic elements were all designed to cleverly store in stage carts for easy transport via truck, but then are able to pivot out of the cart and be easily flown into place for quick assembly and dis-assembly. PRG also created an LED tube solution that resembled neon which outlines the Q and the other gold-painted scenic elements.

One of the touches that Production Manager Joe Sanchez really appreciated was the PRG Rolling Deck, which allowed his crew to assemble at the other end of the arena while rigging, video, lighting, and scenic elements were put into place. The PRG Rolling Deck is a work smarter solution that allows for quick and efficient assembly, which then can be rolled into place allowing all the production team to at the same time. The PRG scenic solutions included the main stage, runway, and B-stage as well.

At the top of the show, Lipson and his team worked with PRG to realize their design of a large Kabuki drop with a snifter from PRG to pull the falling drape away into the Q in a matter of seconds for a fast reveal of the legendary band.

While lifting and timing such a heavy load in the confined space of Detroit’s Cobo Center was no easy challenge, we were able to provide a seamless solution by cueing the smart variable speed chain hoists, automated LED video screens, and turntable through our Stage Command System.
