Live Event Rigger Apprenticeship

Job Title: Live Event Rigger

Departments: Rigging

Reports To: People Services Manager

Live Event Riggers ensure the infrastructure for the scenic, lighting, sound and audio-visual elements of a live event are installed safely, in accordance with technical plans which they are able to read and interpret. They assemble modular structural components as well as lifting these elements into place.

They may be responsible for attaching additional equipment. Working in a sometimes fast paced and pressured environment, Live Event Riggers will show logic and ability to safely work individually, as well as being part of a team, to meet client deadlines.

The work environment may vary and comprise exhibitions, conferences, concerts, sport as well as other related environments. Live event riggers may work at both indoor and outdoor events in a variety of temperatures and weather conditions. They could work unsociable hours but need to ensure adequate rest periods are maintained.

The Live Event Rigger will work under the direction of a Rigging Supervisor(s). The Live Event Rigger will be able to work from plans and follow method statements to plan and safely undertake rigging installations. They will liaise with clients, venue management, consultant riggers and structural engineers.

The Live Event Rigger will have a thorough underpinning knowledge and be able to practically use and inspect rigging equipment, particularly lifting equipment, structural systems and essential ancillary equipment. In doing so they will be capable of undertaking and documenting risk assessments and adhering to safe systems of work whilst accurately identifying and reducing risks.

Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret designs, scaling from drawings to mark out work on site
  • Select suitable components based on load capacity
  • Carry out rigging activities for an event
  • How to read plans, accurately scale and mark out rigging operations and set up lifting equipment
  • Rig hoists/ sling loads/ use modular structural products such as aluminium trusses
  • De-rig and disassemble equipment and structures and return to storage leaving a tidy workplace
  • Manage time and adhere to schedules
  • Work closely with colleagues and line manager
  • Be cooperative and helpful in the workplace
  • Share and pass on information to colleagues, keeping them informed of activities/problems

Core Responsibilities

This apprenticeship will include L2 assessment for the Professional Lighting and Sound Association (PLASA) National Rigging Certificate, an industry recognised qualification

Entry Requirements

It is recommended that they hold a minimum of 3 GCSEs (Grade C or above) in Maths, English and Science and have basic IT skills. Apprentices without level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level prior to completion of their Apprenticeship.

Live Events Technician (Level 3)

Job Title: Live Events Technician (Level 3)

Departments: All

Reports To: People Services Manager

Live events range from concerts, festivals and theatrical performances through to exhibitions, conferences, product launches and showcases.

Live Event Technicians prepare and set-up technical equipment for such events. Ultimately specialising in sound, lighting or video, Live Event Technicians will carry out routine and one-off technical preparation and set-up of equipment for events.

They will have knowledge of the equipment used and the skills needed to store, pick, maintain, transport and build components into a functioning system as well as operate these systems.

A Live Event Technician will be part of the team that turns a venue into a functioning event environment before returning the site to it’s original state, often within a short time frame.

Outside the event environment, Technicians are responsible for the control, servicing, repair and storage of complex technical equipment, in any context working safely and ethically is paramount and many projects are carried out in fast moving, dynamic workplaces.

Live Event Technicians will be expected to work both individually and as part of a production team. They will be able to work with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the work that is undertaken. They will be proactive in finding solutions to problems and identifying areas for improving processes. The nature of this role requires that candidates are physically fit and comfortable working at height.

The skills and knowledge acquired can lead to a variety of roles from on-site Technician to in-house Project Manager, and potentially on to the Account Managers and Production Managers of the future.

Skills:

  • Preparation, test, repair and maintenance of equipment such as Amplifiers, Speakers & Sound Control Desks; Lights, Dimmers & Lighting Control Desks or Video Screens, Projectors and associated Control Equipment.
  • Assembly of systems from component parts.
  • Fault finding in components and systems.
  • Operation of specialised technical equipment and tools.
  • People management and interpersonal skills especially the ability t react to varied working environments.
  • Computer literacy including specialist software systems such as CAD / Design and Rental Management.
  • Understand and interpret systems specifications and drawings.
  • Logistics, with specific reference to truck pack, the ability to judge required space for loads, and prepare Carnets and Manifests for shows travelling outside of the UK.
  • Lifting / Ground Rigging – much of the technical equipment used in live events is hung from pre-rigged support systems.
  • Customer Service – dealing politely and respectfully with customers, ranging from Account Managers to Production Managers to the end client when on site.

Knowledge:

  • Product knowledge and terminology including the theory surrounding chosen specialisms such as sound, light and video.
  • Understand planning processes required to deliver live event and the importance of eliminating errors that can prove costly on site.
  • Selection of the correct tools and equipment for tasks.
  • Electricity and Temporary Electrical supplies; theory, practice and safety
  • Understand management structures within the event environment, site etiquette and culture, including on site communication and interdependencies between departments.
  • Working knowledge of stock control, warehousing, storage, logistics and transportation.
  • Knowledge of First Aid and Health and Safety including manual handling, work at height, noise, working hours and fatigue and related legislation.
  • Product knowledge and terminology including the theory surrounding chosen specialisms such as sound, light and video.
  • Understand planning processes required to deliver live event and the importance of eliminating errors that can prove costly on site.

Duration: Typical duration of 30 months, subject to other factors including previous experience.

Level: This is a Level 3 Apprenticeship.

Review date: This standard will be reviewed after 3 Years.

Entry Requirements

Apprentices without Level 2 English and Maths will be required to achieve this level prior to the end of the Apprenticeship. Basic IT skills and a pass in a GCSE Science subject would be desirable. The final decision will be down to the individual employer
