Mbox® Family of Products

**NEW RELEASE - April 2, 2026 - Mbox® v5.5**

PRG’s Mbox® product family delivers powerful, reliable media playback for live events, broadcast, installations, and enhanced environments. From a fully featured, multi‑layer media server to a streamlined solution for single‑source playback, Mbox provides flexible tools that scale effortlessly from straightforward playback to complex, high‑performance productions.

Designed for modern Mac systems and optimized for real‑time operation, Mbox and Mbox Player combine proven production workflows with advanced playback capabilities—giving creatives, programmers, and operators confidence in every show and every environment.

The Mbox product family consists of two primary applications: Mbox and Mbox Player. Mbox is a fully featured media server built for both live and cued events, supporting multi layer composition with extensive input and output options. Mbox Player is designed for simplicity, focusing on single source media playback with a single output for straightforward, reliable content delivery.

The latest generation, Mbox v5, represents a major evolution of the platform. Rebuilt from the ground up, Mbox v5 is a universal application that runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel based Macs. By leveraging Apple’s Metal framework, Mbox delivers improved performance, greater efficiency, and full compatibility with current Apple hardware and the most recent versions of macOS.

At its core, Mbox is designed for real time operation in demanding production environments. It provides high quality video and audio playback, multi layer composition, and a wide range of effects and transitions, along with flexible video input and output. Advanced pixel mapping capabilities allow Mbox to drive lighting effects that mirror video content or create real time environmental lighting for television, film, and immersive installations. Mbox can be controlled directly from a lighting console or via the Mbox Director application, while the Mbox Remote application enables monitoring and configuration, forming a complete and adaptable control ecosystem.

Mbox is available through a subscription based licensing system with four levels—Designer, Studio Plus, Studio, and Mini—making it easy to match system capabilities to production requirements. The Designer license unlocks all 2D and 3D features, offering maximum creative flexibility with 24 playback layers and no limits on video output or pixel mapping capacity. Studio and Studio Plus retain the full 2D feature set while scaling back 3D functionality. Studio supports 12 playback layers, video output up to 4K, and 10,000 pixel mapping pixels, while Studio Plus doubles both video output and pixel mapping capacity. The Mini license preserves the core 2D playback and composition features in a more streamlined configuration, with six playback layers, up to two 2K outputs, and support for 5,000 pixel mapping pixels.

Across all license levels, Mbox maintains a consistent workflow. Every layer can combine 2D textures with 3D objects, transitions can be performed directly within a layer, and all systems support 4K playback. A broad selection of play modes, effects, and transitions is available throughout the product line, supporting creative consistency from programming through execution.

Mbox License Comparison

The version comparison of the Mbox software from PRG

Mbox Director and Mbox Remote integrate seamlessly with the media server software to provide complete control, configuration, content synchronization, and monitoring. Used together, they can eliminate the need for a lighting console during setup while still supporting console based control when required, offering flexibility for a wide range of workflows and production environments.

Mbox Player is the newest member of the Mbox family. Player is a media playback application created with the ideas of simple setup, quick programming and streamlined playback control.

Mbox Player is purpose built for simplified media delivery. It focuses on single source playback with a standard 16:9 output for video, still images, and text, with integrated audio playback. Media is selected through an onboard user interface and can be linked sequentially using cuts, crossfades, and delays. Mbox Player works equally well as a standalone playback solution or as part of a larger system with multiple computers and independent playback.

Both Mbox and Mbox Player are compatible with macOS versions from 12 Monterey through 26 Tahoe, running natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel processors. Supported on all recent Apple Mac computers, the software can be downloaded freely and run in demo mode, allowing users to evaluate workflows and performance on their own systems before purchasing a subscription.
