Behind the Screen: Engineering Safety for Outdoor LED

Summer is festival season. And while we all hope for warm, sunny days, the weather often has other plans. Sudden storms, strong winds and rapidly changing conditions can quickly become a serious challenge for outdoor productions - especially when large LED surfaces are involved.

While LED walls are an essential part of the visual experience, their large surface area also makes them particularly vulnerable to wind. Due to their extensive surface area, they are highly exposed to wind loads and can act much like a sail. Without the right support, this can create significant risks for the screen, the surrounding infrastructure and everyone on site.

To ensure a safe and reliable installation, every LED system requires a carefully planned approach to wind loads, structural stability and on-site conditions.

One of the key solutions is the so called wind bracing. Wind bracing is a structural system that is either integrated into or attached to LED screens to create a stronger and more rigid construction. Its purpose is to absorb and distribute horizontal forces, such as wind loads, helping to protect the screen from deformation, instability, or, in extreme cases, structural failure. The right solution depends on factors such as screen size, structural design, location, expected wind conditions and the overall event setup. It must therefore be calculated for the specific installation. Wind bracing alone is not enough. Safe operation also requires suitable ballast or anchoring, defined wind limits, weather monitoring and a clear onsite action plan.

Product-specific safety measures

Product-integrated wind-bracing solutions are structures attached directly to the rear of individual LED modules. They provide an initial level of structural support and help distribute wind loads across the system.

However, the manufacturer’s specifications must always be followed. Each solution is designed for a defined wind load depending on the overall configuration and may require additional structural securing or a separate engineering assessment.

At PRG, we work with a range of LED products that feature integrated wind-bracing systems, creating stronger and more stable structures directly within the screen design. This approach not only improves structural integrity but also streamlines installation and optimizes transport and logistics. For outdoor events where weather conditions are a key consideration, solutions such as the InfiLED AR Series with our Atlas frame, ROE Vanish V4ST, and our own TITAN X have repeatedly proven their performance in demanding environments even without increasing the set up times. These systems combine exceptional visual quality with engineered stability, allowing productions to remain safe without compromising on creative impact.

structural wind-bracing systems

In addition, external or structural wind-bracing systems, such as windbreakers or dedicated truss structures, can be installed to reinforce the LED wall. These systems help secure the large surface area exposed to wind, transfer loads safely and reduce unwanted movement or vibration.

The structural design must always be tailored to the local wind zone, the size of the screen and the specific installation configuration. This requires careful calculation and a project-specific structural assessment.

Expertise Behind Every Structure

PRG supports this process with experienced technical planners and structural specialists who assess the potential risks, define the required safety measures and ensure that the installation meets all relevant on-site safety requirements.

By combining engineering expertise with decades of field experience, we can confidently support projects of all sizes and complexities. From festivals and concerts to corporate events and sporting productions, we help clients identify the necessary safety measures, engineering assessments, and protective solutions required for their specific event.

Safety Without Compromise

At PRG, our goal is simple: deliver spectacular visual experiences while keeping audiences, crews, and performers safe.

Wind bracing may not be the most visible innovation on site, but it plays a vital role in ensuring every event is prepared for whatever the elements bring. Combined with expert planning, engineering support, and proven LED technologies, it helps create a safer and more reliable environment for everyone involved.
