Labrinth at Coachella: Designing a Cinematic World in Motion
At Coachella, where spectacle often drives the visual language, Labrinth’s set stood out for its control. Instead of chasing every beat, the performance unfolded ...
When Brandy took the stage at Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, audiences were greeted by a custom scenic environment anchored by an oversized boombox. Behind the scenes, the project came together on an exceptionally compressed timeline.
Awarded just before Memorial Day, PRG Scenic was tasked with fabricating key scenic elements for the performance in time for festival load-in. Working with Production Manager Chris Gratton and Designer Chase Hall, the team redesigned an ambitious original concept into a streamlined scenic package that could be fabricated and delivered in just five shop days.
The final build included a custom boombox centerpiece, performance ramp and scenic graphic elements designed to support Brandy's festival appearance while meeting budget and scheduling requirements.
"By the time the job was awarded, it was the Wednesday before Memorial Day," said Mark Peterson, General Manager Sales and Business Development. "Normally, a project like this would take several weeks to engineer, fabricate and paint."
To meet the accelerated timeline, PRG Scenic relied on close collaboration between project management, fabrication, and the creative team. Project Manager Tabitha Wimsett coordinated real-time design decisions, while in-house 3D printing capabilities helped rapidly produce detailed elements for the boombox, including speaker surrounds, knobs and cassette deck components.
The rapid schedule required quick material sourcing, fast approvals, and continuous communication between the PRG team and the show's designers. The result was a completed scenic package delivered in time for the festival performance.
For PRG Scenic, the project demonstrated how collaboration, fabrication expertise, and creative problem-solving can transform a concept into a festival-ready scenic build on even the tightest timeline.
